This sort of aimlessness dominates the film, but to my mind that actually makes it somehow all the more totally 80’s. Frankie wants to go upstairs to stop the two up there from fighting, but one of the men downstairs offers Frankie some corned beef and the other offers to get her into a Tiny Tim concert. In one scene, for example, our protagonist Frankie comes home to hear her friend Trish upstairs fighting with her estranged husband, whose business managers sit downstairs eating corned beef. Most scenes throughout the film go absolutely nowhere, typically ending mid-thought with what is, I suppose, intended to be some kind of joke. The sad thing about revisiting the film, though, is I find now it has little to offer beyond the two things, as Malkovich somehow delivers these terrific performances in a film that’s barely narratively stable enough to allow for any character depth to arise. Add to Malkovich the film’s pseudo-theme song “Happy Together,” which is easily one of the catchiest songs in existence, and I suppose the movie’s bound to stand out in some positive ways.

His physicality and line delivery in both roles are utterly distinct, and anything legitimately funny or compelling in the movie comes from him (or Laurie Metcalf, who plays a small role, but it’s one that stands out among the rest).

In his dual role as an introverted inventor and the aforementioned android he has modelled after himself, Malkovich plays both roles so fantastically well that there’s no mistaking the two characters for each other, even when one is actually pretending to be the other. Make no mistake about it, the entire weight of this movie is on John Malkovich’s shoulders. After re-watching it, though, I’d in fact say she got two things right: John Malkovich and The Turtles. But it seems Desperately Seeking Susan-director Susan Seidelman seems to have done something right with it for it to have so heavily impacted a young me. Why that is I don’t know for sure, however.
